Winter in Madison doesn’t mean staying indoors until spring. In fact, even during the coldest months, our city offers plenty of simple, beginner-friendly ways to stay active outside. This week on the blog, we are sharing how you don’t need extreme gear or outdoor expertise to enjoy winter here. With plowed paths, nearby parks, and community amenities, getting outside is easier than you might think.
Winter Walks
Walking is one of the easiest ways to stay active year-round, and Madison makes it winter-friendly. Popular spots like the UW Arboretum, Pheasant Branch Conservancy, and neighborhood paths throughout Madison are regularly plowed and maintained. A winter walk offers fresh air, peaceful scenery, and a much-needed energy boost - perfect for a quick break or an after-work reset.
Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is a great way to explore Madison’s natural areas without needing advanced skills. Local parks such as Elver Park and Pheasant Branch Conservancy are popular destinations for snowshoeing, and many nature centers offer affordable snowshoe rentals. If you can walk, you can snowshoe! Plus, wildlife is also abundant this time of year, so it's a great way to experience nature in the colder months.
Ice Skating at Community Ice Rinks
Ice skating is a winter staple in Madison and an easy way to stay active while having fun. Community rinks at Vilas Park, Tenney Park, and Elver Park offer open skating when conditions allow throughout the winter months. Many locations provide skate rentals, making it easy to try skating without owning equipment.
Beginner-Friendly Cross-Country Skiing
Cross-country skiing is one of the most accessible winter sports in Wisconsin, and Madison has plenty of beginner-friendly trails for the whole family. The UW Arboretum has over 10 miles of designated trails for cross-country skiing in the winter months. Odana Hills Golf Course, which is seasonally converted for skiing, features 5 miles of easy trails in 4 unique loops. When conditions allow, trails are groomed for both skate and classic skiing, and the gentle terrain makes it ideal for newcomers and first-timers. Rentals are available nearby.
