As the holidays approach, there’s something special about watching the Madison community come alive with generosity. If you’ve been looking for ways to get involved or give back this season, you don’t have to look far. Madison is full of organizations doing incredible work, and there’s a place for everyone to help, whether that means donating a few hours, a few dollars, or a few items from your pantry. Here are a few meaningful ways to get involved this holiday season.
1. Join the Madison Reading Project’s Community Book Drive
Books have a way of sparking imagination and connection, and no one embodies that better than the Madison Reading Project (MRP). Each year, they bring the community together through their Community Book Drive, running from November 10 to December 10, 2025. This year’s drive supports MRP’s mission to share over 100,000 brand-new books with kids across Dane County. Even one book can make a difference.
How to get involved:
- As an individual: Donate new, high-quality children’s books or make a monetary gift to help purchase books for all age groups.
- As a business: Become a sponsor! Local companies are encouraged to partner with MRP to help expand their reach and impact.
2. Volunteer with Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin
Hunger doesn’t take a holiday, and Second Harvest Foodbank is there year-round, making sure families across southern Wisconsin have access to healthy meals.
You can spend a few hours volunteering at their warehouse, help sort and pack food donations, or make a monetary donation. Hosting a food drive in your building or at work is another great way to bring people together for a good cause.
3. Support The Road Home Dane County
For many families, the holidays are about coming home, but not everyone has a place to return to. The Road Home Dane County helps families experiencing homelessness find permanent housing and long-term stability. This time of year, they often need gift cards, household supplies, and volunteers to help organize donation drives or set up new homes. Supporting The Road Home means giving families not just shelter, but hope and a chance to rebuild.
4. Volunteer with the Dane County Humane Society
If your idea of giving back involves wagging tails and whiskers, the Dane County Humane Society is a great place to spend your time. Volunteers help walk dogs, care for cats, foster animals, or lend a hand at events. The shelter also accepts donations of pet food, treats, blankets, and cleaning supplies. Even a small contribution, like dropping off a bag of food, can make life a little brighter for a pet waiting for their forever home.
5. Lend a Hand at Olbrich Botanical Gardens
If you love the outdoors, Olbrich Botanical Gardens offers volunteer opportunities year-round, from helping in the greenhouses to assisting with events and garden maintenance. It’s a peaceful and rewarding way to give back, surrounded by plants, fresh air, and people who share a love for nature. Plus, volunteering here is a lovely reminder that even in the middle of winter, Madison is full of life and beauty.
Give Back, Madison Style
Giving back doesn’t always mean grand gestures. Sometimes it’s as simple as donating a book, serving a meal, or sharing your time. Each small act of kindness adds up, creating a ripple effect that keeps Madison’s community spirit strong. This season, consider finding one cause that speaks to you and getting involved. You’ll help make someone else’s day a little brighter, and chances are, it’ll make your season a little brighter too. At West Madison Apartments, we’re proud to be part of a community that shows up for one another. Here’s to a season filled with connection, compassion, and the joy that comes from giving.
