Big changes are coming to Madison’s public transportation! The city is set to launch its first-ever Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route on September 22nd, 2024. This new, more efficient public transportation system will make getting around Madison faster and easier for everyone, especially for our residents at High Point Commons and Sauk Creek!

What is Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)?

BRT is a modern, efficient public transit system that delivers faster and more reliable commutes. Route A will run east to west, connecting major parts of the city with buses arriving every 15 minutes throughout the day. This means easier commutes, faster access to downtown, and less stress over finding parking or navigating through traffic.

The BRT will use all-electric buses that are designed for a smoother ride, increased capacity, and a more eco-friendly commute. Plus, with dedicated bus-only lanes and priority at traffic signals, these buses will move through the city quickly, helping you avoid traffic jams and delays.

How to Use the New System

If you’re new to BRT or feeling a bit overwhelmed by the changes, don’t worry! Here’s a quick breakdown of what you need to know:

  • Frequent Service: Route A buses arrive every 15 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays, with 30-minute service on Sundays and holidays.
  • Ticketing: You can use the FastFare system for easy boarding, or use the ticket vending machines at BRT stations if you prefer to pay with cash.
  • Real-Time Updates: Use the new Bus Tracker to monitor bus schedules and stay updated on your route.
  • Bus Only Traffic Lanes: Not sure how to navigate the colored lanes?
    • Red lanes or solid red lines mean they are bus-only areas, not open to the public.
    • Exceptions will be posted on signage or street lettering, and these will not be painted red.
    • Left turns will be allowed in some areas, but only in areas where the lines are dashed.
  • Efficient Commutes: Thanks to bus-only lanes and priority at traffic signals, your commute time will be much shorter!
